We get asked all the time “What should we wear for our engagement pictures?”. I understand why people have this question as these photos can be just as special as the wedding day. Set Your Location First

Figuring out your location should be the first thing you do as you plan your engagement session. Your location will help set the mood and provide inspiration for both your outfits. This will then allow you the freedom to decided how you want to approach your session. You don’t want to make the mistake of arriving to your location and totally feeling out of place. The photo above is a great example! These two decided they wanted to have a destination engagement at their favorite beach resort in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Planning ahead, they knew it was going to be warm day so they decided that wanted to feel as comfortable as possible and enjoy the place they love most. They decided on beach attire but still added fun details to make their outfits fit perfectly with the setting. We loved how it all beautifully came together for them. Decided on your location first then start thinking of your outfits to best fit the mood and your style.

PRO TIP: Ask your Photographer for location ideas if you don’t already have something in mind. We love providing all of our couples with our E-SESSION GUIDE on how to prepare for your session, a list of our favorite locations, and fun tips to feel comfortable in front of the camera!

Make your outfits cohesive & complimentary

I think it's important that your outfit colors flow and are cohesive…without completely matching or being distracting to each other. We would suggest starting with her outfit and then add his outfit to compliment it. You can never go wrong in any location with soft muted or pastels colors as they photograph so well in any setting. We would also suggest having a second change of outfit to mix it up a bit.

Some ideas for the second outfit could be more of a formal look, like a cocktail dress or evening gown. Suit, vest, sports jacket or whatever your version of “dressy” for him. Don’t forget to add accessories to your outfits. You will hear us reference this a lot! Accessories will bring your outfits to life. Some examples for her could be a nice set of earrings, necklace, scarf, (don’t forget your engagement ring) or a sun hat. An example for him could be a nice watch. Guys usually can keep it simple and that totally works.

PRO TIP: If you still feel you’re not 100% sure with your outfits, go ahead and send your photographer picture examples of your choices. We are always thrilled to be a part of the process and help you pick the right look! Most of our couples ask us for our opinion and we love it!

Make sure you’re comfortable

We want you to feel comfortable and most importantly feel like yourselves. Trendy, stylish, sexy and fun! Looking and feeling your best will have you both naturally snuggling up to each other and leaning in for random kisses. Those are the moments we inspire to capture. Go with what you know will hit a home run so you can focus on each other and not regretting how you look and feel!

PRO TIP: Try your outfits on before your session! stand next to each other and look in the mirror. How does it look and feel? Anything you need to switch or see isn’t needed? This is the perfect time to make those changes. It also doesn’t hurt to bringing a few ideas along on the day of your session. This is great if we need to make any last minute change for your shirt, dress, shoes, or accessories.

After your session, since you’re already dressed up and looking amazing, this could be a great time to go on a little date night after your session!

Feel & look like yourself

I want to finish by saying that I think you should mainly focus on choosing your outfits based on your personality. If you don’t feel comfortable in the clothes, you won’t look comfortable in them. Bring clothes you feel GREAT wearing, because if you feel great you will look GREAT. We hope the main take away from this, is that you take pictures that look like you. That is how we document your love! These photos will hopefully be hung on the walls of your future home together. Your future children will see these and see what their parents looked like before they were married. We’ll take care of the rest so you can focus on each other and let your love shine through these captured memories!

We created a Pinterest Board specifically for our clients, full of great outfit and color ideas! Follow this link HERE to see our outfit examples and hopefully provides you more ideas as you plan your beautiful engagement session!

Congratulations on your engagement! Please don’t hesitate to ask for any wedding planning tips or inquire for our collections & availability! We would love to hear from you!
